Beachin' in Belize

There is something special about Belize: the culture, food, beaches, jungles, and the vibes are all just different. From arrival to departure, the people in Belize showed us so much care and kindness. We stayed in Caye Caulker, which is about an hour boat ride from Belize City where the airport is. We took a taxi from the airport to the boat dock and purchased round trip tickets from Belize City to Caye Caulker. Prices for the boat were fair and we enjoyed the boat rides there and back. Book a water taxi to Caye Caulker upon arrival in Belize City.

I traveled here with a friend, but Belize is the perfect place to travel solo too. I recommend staying in Caye Caulker, a top choice for tourists. Caye (pronounced Key) Caulker is such a cool place, with island vibes. A lot of the locals walk around without shoes (by choice) and they live by the motto "Go Slow." I appreciated the laid back culture, where no one was in a rush.

I went snorkeling for the first time ever! It was a memorable experience, being underwater with the turtles and the fish. I even got to swim with...baby nurse sharks! Sounds crazy, but I didn't get in with them until the boat captain turned one over and put his finger in its mouth. Belize is home to the Great Blue Hole, one of the most beautiful sinkholes in the world. While it was too far to go see, it's something I'd highly recommend checking out if you plan a trip to Belize. We booked a half-day snorkeling tour through our Airbnb; there are several companies that you can book through on the island. The company we used was Go Caye Caulker: their prices are reasonable, you get to see a lot during the tour including Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and lunch is included.

I attended my first full moon party on the first night in Belize. It's exactly what it sounds like: a huge party on the beach on the night of a full moon. Now these parties don't happen every full moon, but when they do, you don't want to miss it. We took a boat from Caye Caulker to another small island for the party. Belizeans sure know how to party, just ask a local.

The food was absolutely amazing! I think it's safe to admit that Caribbean islands have bomb food, no matter where you go. The plantains, rice, chicken, and fish were some of my favorite things to eat during my time in Belize. You have to try the fry jack, because it's a Belizean staple in the morning.

Travel tip: Exchange your currency before you leave the airport if you can, either in the States or at the airport in Belize. The exchange rate for the US Dollar to the Belize Dollar is typically $1Belize Dollar to $.50 USD.

The weather in Belize is typically beautiful and hot. We went in February and to beat the heat, we relaxed in the hammocks or laid by the beach. Their rainy season is from June-November.

The Split and the Lazy Lizard are must sees in Caye Caulker. The Split is an area of the island that was split in two by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. There is a swing that swings over the split in the middle of the ocean. The Lazy Lizard is a popular bar for a nice drink and good vibes.

Many Americans are moving to Belize for remote work, to retire or for a change in scenery. Belize is on my list of places to invest in a rental property or a vacation home. Either way, I know I'll make my way back to Belize one day.
